Srirangapatna: An accident occurred on Mysuru-Bengaluru Expressway near Srinivasa Agrahara in Srirangapatna taluk, resulting in the death of a young individual from Mysuru.

The accident occurred when the vehicle, in which the victim Akshay (26) was travelling from Mysuru, lost control and veered across the road median, colliding with an oncoming car from the Bengaluru side.

Initially, a news report in Star of Mysore on Feb. 15 said that it was the Bengaluru-bound car that crossed the median. However, a caller named Sujith Shetty, a relative of one of the passengers of the Bengaluru-bound car, informed SOM over the phone on Feb. 16 morning that it was, in fact, the car that was going from Mysuru

(Akshay and friends) to Bengaluru that caused the collision. Police confirmed that three other occupants of the vehicle sustained severe injuries and were admitted to a private hospital in Mysuru.

The deceased Akshay was a resident of Ittigegud (Indiranagar) in Mysuru. Among the injured is Sudheer, along with             two others.

Akshay and his companions were en route to Bengaluru and the driver lost control of the vehicle, leading it to breach the road median and collide with the car approaching from Bengaluru. Both vehicles suffered extensive damage upon impact, necessitating the intervention of the Police to clear the wreckage and restore traffic flow. Srirangapatna Town Police have  registered a case.

Srirangapatna: The Gadde Ranganatha Swamy Temple, dating back to the 15th century and situated near the historic town of Srirangapatna along the Mysuru-Bengaluru Expressway, is currently  undergoing reconstruction.

The temple, positioned on the banks of the River Cauvery at Brahmapura, faced the risk of being obscured during the construction of the Mysuru-Bengaluru Expressway, but now, with the completion of the Expressway by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), efforts to revitalise the heritage site are in full swing.

The heritage temple is being meticulously reconstructed, stone by stone and pillar by pillar, from its original location. This relocation is a result of the completion of the Expressway, and the temple is now positioned near the Cauvery River, 200 metres from its initial location and 100 metres from the road.

Mysuru-Kodagu MP Pratap Simmha visited the ongoing construction site last Saturday and shared images of the progress on social media platform ‘X’ (formerly Twitter). The Gadde Ranganatha Swamy Temple, constructed by Vijayanagar rulers around five centuries ago, boasts 12 large stone pillars.

The front pillars are round-shaped, while the remaining ones are square-shaped. The sanctum sanctorum houses the idol of the presiding deity, Gadde Ranganatha Swamy, positioned at a height of approximately 3½ feet.

Lakshmish Guruji, the priest of the Lakshmi Temple in Srirangapatna, explained to Star of Mysore that the idol of Gadde Ranganatha Swamy underwent careful removal, adhering to Vedic rituals, before the translocation. The idol is currently housed at the Lakshmi Temple and will undergo the traditional ‘Prana Pratishtapana’ (consecration) once the new Gadde Ranganatha Swamy Temple is reconstructed.

Despite not being listed among protected monuments, the Department of Archaeology, Museums and Heritage submitted a report to the Mandya District Administration emphasising the temple’s significant historical value and the need for conservation. Consequently, the Mandya District Administration came forward to facilitate the relocation of the temple.

This initiative mirrors a similar effort in 2017 when the 18th-century Tipu Armoury, weighing 1,050 tonnes and located in Srirangapatna, was translocated to make way for the double-tracking work of the Mysuru-Bengaluru Railway line.

Mysore/Mysuru: The image of elusive tiger that has created panic in Mahadevapura and surrounding villages in Srirangapatna, Mandya district was captured on the camera trap installed in one of the private farms in Channahalli on Wednesday night.

Though, there were complaints about the tiger movements in ‘Shooting’ Mahadevapura, Channahalli and Bidarahallihundi, there is no oficial confirmation. However, with the help of the images and pugmarks captured in the cameras the Forest Department has confirmed the presence of the tiger. The Forest Department has also installed at a total of 15 camera traps in nearby locations to track the movements of the tiger and also cages to capture the big cat.

Chief Conservator of Forests, Mysuru Circle Malathi Priya has been monitoring the operation to capture the tiger. Leopard Task Force (LTF) has been deployed at the spot. The forest officials believe that the tiger might have entered Gendehosahalli Forest Area as they found the carcass of a wild boar in the area which they suspect to have been killed by the tiger.

The department has urged villagers to be alert while working in the fields and moving around the vicinity. Contact Srirangapatna RFO on Mob: 99728 45176 and forest personnel on Mob: 94482 06917 and 94804 42454 to share information on sighting the tiger.

Villagers unnerved; four goats killed last night at Gobbaragala, 4 kms from Mahadevapura

Srirangapatna: Residents of Mahadevapura, popularly known as ‘Shooting’ Mahadevapura, situated just 10 km from Mysuru and the neighbouring villages are gripped with panic following the sighting of a tiger, a video of which has gone viral on social media.

In addition to the apprehension caused by the presence of a roaming tiger, nocturnal leopard attacks have added to the local fears. Last evening, a leopard reportedly killed four goats near the house of Nagaraju in Gobbaragala village, just four kilometres from Mahadevapura.

Villagers and Nagaraju told reporters this morning that the leopard has been seen multiple times in the village. Given the latest presence of the tiger in the vicinity, villagers express that they would not be astonished if the tiger was responsible for the goat attacks.

Nagaraju recounted that on the previous evening, he had secured the goats near his house at 7 pm and had gone inside for dinner so that he could tie them inside the shed later. During his meal, he heard his goats bleating anxiously. Upon rushing to the scene, he discovered that the leopard had attacked and killed four goats, each bitten on the neck region.

The video footage of the roaming tiger was captured around the Channahalli-Mahadevapura connecting road, near Chikkammana Temple on the outskirts of Mahadevapura, as well as in sugarcane fields and farms. A week ago, the same tiger had reportedly attacked a goat belonging to a villager named Puttamma in Channahalli village.

Now, the tiger’s sightings have become a daily occurrence in the vicinity. Upon receiving this information, Deputy Range Forest Officer Rajesh visited the area along with Srirangapatna Range Forest Officer Puttaswamy, Assistant Forest Officer Anandegowda and personnel from the Mysuru Leopard Task Force (LTF).

Drones to track big cat

The team verified the tiger’s movements and instructed villagers to refrain from venturing out of their houses during the night. They also cautioned them to take precautions while working in agricultural fields during the day. The Forest Department, facing challenges in placing a cage due to the tiger’s movements, is utilising drones to track the tiger.

The villagers reported that while the tiger’s presence did not cause harm, they could hear its roar while working in their agricultural fields. They urged the forest officials to expedite measures to capture the tiger for the villagers’ peace of mind, noting that the tiger was large and appeared to be solitary.

The Arakere Police are also engaging with villagers, urging them to stay indoors and creating awareness about the tiger’s presence. Additionally, a team of 30 to 35 Forest Department personnel is involved in efforts to capture the tiger. However, due to the tiger’s movement on the other side of a water body, placing traps (cages) has proven challenging.

Same tiger near TVS factory?

Meanwhile, it is reported that the same tiger was sighted in Sindhuvalli, Shettihalli, Rampura, TVS factory near Kadakola, Balluruhundi, Duggahalli, Haadanooru Odeyanapura, Indiranagar and surrounding places on the Mysuru-Nanjangud border. While leopards and elephants have been spotted in the Mandya district recently, this marks the first instance of a tiger roaming near Mysuru city.

Mahadevapura is located about 23 kms from Mandya, 15 kms away from Srirangapatna and just 10 kms from Mysuru. The tiger, which created panic in villages located near Nanjangud is said to be creating fright among the villagers in Mahadevapura.

Shocking case at Belagola in Srirangapatna taluk of Mandya; Tahsildar submits report to Deputy Commissioner

By S.T. Ravikumar

Mysore/Mysuru: In a clear case of fence eating the crop, three Officers have been charged of blatantly ignoring the law to help a land owner develop a residential layout after encroaching upon14 guntas of land acquired for building a canal.

The shocking case has surfaced at Belagola village in Srirangapatna taluk, Mandya district and Tahsildar of Srirangapatna has filed a report including the charge-sheet against three Officers — Jayaramamurthy, previous Revenue Inspector of Srirangapatna taluk, Village Administration Officer Puttaswamy and Assistant Director of Town and Country Planning, K. Balachandar.

The charge-sheet filed under sub-sections 1 to 4 has been submitted to the Office of the Deputy Commissioner (DC), Mandya, on Dec. 28, 2023.

The incident came to light after Advocate S. Mahesh, a resident of Jayalakshmipuram in Mysuru, filed a complaint to Lokayukta Police. In his complaint, Advocate Mahesh had alleged that ‘14 guntas of the total 2.12 acres of land in Survey No. 44 at Belagola had been acquired for the construction of canal, but the alienation procedure has been approved including the total extent of the land covering the land meant for canal area, flouting all the rules. Following this, Srirangapatna Tahsildar had carried out a joint inspection with the Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE) of No. 4, Varuna Canal Sub-Division,  Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Limited (CNNL), Mysuru and had submitted a report to the DC stating that the said part (14 guntas) of the land has been acquired for the canal.’

As the illegality was confirmed, DC in his letter to the Tahsildar on Dec. 6, 2023 had directed to submit a charge-sheet against the three Officers for aiding the land owner. Accordingly, the Tahsildar filed a charge-sheet, along with her findings to the DC on Dec. 28, 2023.

CNNL had acquired 14 guntas of land for canal works way back in the year 1990 and had also issued compensation to the land owner identified as Veerabhadraiah. Taking into consideration, the motive of the land owner to conceal the information while getting alienation certificate for the land in connivance with the Officers, a case has been also registered against him under Section 192-A of Karnataka Land Revenue Act, 1964 at KRS Police Station.
