Mysore/Mysuru: According to statistics, by 2100, the global temperature will increase in the range of 1.4 degree Celsius to 5.8 degree Celsius and it is going to change weather and will become a topic of discussion in the coming decades, opined Prof. G. Hemantha Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, University of Mysore (UoM).

He was delivering his presidential address in a national-level webinar on ‘Climate Change: Ecological Restoration and Socio-Ecological Sustainability” organised jointly by the Department of Environmental Sciences, UoM, Centre for Ecological Economics and Natural Resources and Institute for Social and Economical Changes (ISEC), Bengaluru, yesterday.

The VC said that when compared to 10,000 years ago, global temperature will change rapidly in the next one century. Already, plants and animals were finding it difficult to adjust to the current weather condition. This has been the main reason for swift changes in global temperature. As part of ‘Go green’ campaign, the University will be planting 10,000 saplings in the campus, planning to buy two e-vehicles and install solar lights. 

There are 15,000 big and 9,000 small trees in the Manasagangothri campus. Students were being used to increase the green cover in Varsity campus. A similar campaign has been taken up in Chamarajanagar, Mandya and Hassan Post Graduate Centres. A new Rain Water Harvesting Technology was being adopted to store rain water and to meet demand during rainy season.
