Mysore/Mysuru: The valedictory of Mysuru Zonal Mock Assembly Session, organised by KILPR in association with the city’s JSS Law College, at Mysuru ZP Hall, was held later in the evening.

Presiding over the valedictory, former MLC Thontadarya said that there was an urgent need for Law and Parliamentary reforms and such reforms should begin with us and in our homes.

Pointing out that it is essential for everyone to understand that nation comes first, Thontadarya regretted that problems are only increasing after the country gained independence in 1947.

Contending that correcting the wrongs lies in our own hands, he stressed on the need to ensure that people’s power remains in the hands of the people itself.

Recalling his political journey, Thontadarya said that he entered politics after having a brief stint as a Lawyer.

Stating that he spent only Rs. 35 during his first ever election, Thontadarya said that times have completely changed now and people are talking about spending crores of rupees even for minor elections.

Emphasising on the need for Law students to have an independent thinking, he said that they should bear in mind that they are an important part of the society and hence must work for its betterment.

Former MLA Vasu, in his address, said that the contributions made by the erstwhile Mysore Maharajas for the growth of the State remains unmatchable.

Recalling that the city’s K.R. Hospital built by the Maharajas over a century ago still remains popular as ‘Doddaspatre’ among the rural masses, he said that the Hospital is among the many such facilities provided by the erstwhile rulers.

Though he succeeded in bringing many Government  Hospitals on KRS Road as Chamaraja MLA earlier, he still feels that all these are insignificant when compared to the contributions of Wadiyars.

Vasu and Thontadarya distributed prizes to the students  who excelled in the mock Assembly Session.

Mysore/Mysuru: Principal District and Sessions Judge M.L. Raghunath inaugurated the Legal Services Clinic, organised jointly by JSS Law College and District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), at a programme held at JSS Law College in Kuvempunagar here this morning.

Speaking on the occasion, Judge M.L. Raghunath said that Law is very much a part of every citizen of the country and it is important that Court judgments reach the common man too. Stressing on the need for introducing more Kannada in delivery of legal services, he said that many law books in Kannada have hit the markets, which is a welcome sign.

Pointing out that Advocates should ensure justice to everyone sans any discrimination or disparity, he called upon the Law students to understand the nuances of Law much better as it would help them in their profession.

Former High Court Judge Justice Arali Nagaraj, who presided, observed that the justice delivery system is based on three primary factors — Creation of legal awareness among the common man, rendering legal assistance or getting legal access to those who are in need and amicable settlement of disputes between warring parties, through conciliatory talks or counselling or mediation.

Noting that a human being is a subject to law before birth and after death, Justice Nagaraj maintained that a human being is legally bound right from the  period of issuance of birth certificate till the issuance of death certificate.

Advising budding advocates to understand every aspect of Law in depth, he said “If you can wipe off tears of at least 10 distressed or disturbed persons, then the almighty will ensure that no tears will roll out of your eyes.”

Emphasising on the need for dissemination of all types of knowledge including Law, he said that those who do not share their knowledge, work or experience are doing a great disservice to the country and the society.

Making a reference to legal fraternity entering politics in large numbers, Justice Nagaraj said that 21 out of 30 Chief Ministers of the State were from the legal fraternity and their legal knowledge came in handy in administration.

Senior Civil Judge and DLSA Member-Secretary Devaraj Bhute was the guest of honour. JSS Law College Chief Executive Prof. K.S. Suresh and others were present.

Mysore:  “The role of a lawyer in society is very important who should always have a concern for the poor,” asserted Shankrayya B. Vastramath, Principal Secretary Department of Law. He was delivering the address at the 12th Graduation Ceremony of JSS Law College at its premises in Kuvempungar here last evening.

Shankrayya Vastramath asked lawyers to function within the set framework and help to resolve social problems in society. He advised budding lawyers to win the confidence of the clients with honesty and dedication to become popular in the long run.

He opined that law students learn only 20% in college and the rest 80% is learnt in the Court. However, he observed that many young lawyers when there are no cases to handle in the Court they waste time chatting in canteen and just go home. He instead suggested the new lawyers to observe how the senior lawyers argue in the Court and note the points to gain knowledge.

Speaking on the occasion, High Court Judge Ravi Malimath said that learning does not stop at college and goes on in the profession eternally. He advised lawyers never to compromise in criminal cases and stressed that greed for money spoils the stature.

Degree certificates were presented to 104 candidates.

The rank winners were: LLM – B.R. Muralidhar; LLB – Venkatesh Soma Reddy, H.M. Bipin, D. Uday Kumar and Milas Arul Naronha; BA, LLB – M.
