The U-19 Indian Men’s cricket team created history yesterday as they entered the finals of the Under-19 World Cup for the record 5th time defeating the Proteas in the semi-final held at the Sahara Park Willowmoore Cricket Stadium.

India’s young star Sachin Dhas spearheaded Team India’s recovery with a stellar innings of 96 runs, leading them to victory chasing a modest target of 245 runs in the first semi-final of the World Cup. Team India started on a shaky note but a record-breaking partnership of 171 runs in 187 balls for the fifth wicket between Sachin Dhas (96) and skipper Uday Saharan (81), rescued India following a collapse in the top order.

Earlier, South African opener Lhuan-dre Pretorius provided his team with a good start and everything was going great for the hosts before Indian spinners Musheer Khan, Murugan Abhishek and Priyanshu Moliya applied their magic in the game and South African batters started collapsing like pack of cards.

India maintained relentless pressure on the hosts, never easing off the accelerator throughout the innings. Despite their efforts, South Africa became the first team in the tournament to surpass the 170-run mark against India, ultimately posting a total of 244/7 in their 50 overs.

Team India has dominated the U-19 World Cup so far, emerging victorious in three of their games by margins exceeding 200 runs.

India will face the winners of the second semi-final between Australia and Pakistan in the finals of the U-19 World Cup to be held the Willowmoore Park on Feb. 11. Live telecast will be available on Star Sports and Disney + Hotstar Network from 1.30 pm (IST).

Mysore/Mysuru: The BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) Under-19 Cooch Behar National Cricket Tournament, hosted by Mysuru Zone of Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), got off to a start at SDNR (Srikanta Datta Narasimharaja) Wadiyar Stadium in Manasagangothri here this morning, with hosts Karnataka taking on Uttarakhand in the four-day match.

Uttarakhand, who won the toss and elected to bat first, were 117 for 4 in 38 overs when we went to the press. The visitors got off to a poor start losing three quick wickets (Abhyuday-9 runs, Poorvansh Dhruv-2 and Abhinav- 0), before captain Aarav Mahajan and  Sansakar Raut resurrected the innings and took the team total beyond the 100 run mark.

Raut (43 runs) was the fourth wicket to fall, following which Mahajan (53 n.o) was joined by wicket-keeper batsman Rajyavardhan (1 n.o) and the two were at the crease when we went to the press.

For hosts Karnataka, Mysuru lad Ishaan picked up three wickets, while Samarth bagged the other wicket.

Samit Dravid, the son of former Cricketer and currently BCCI National Head Coach Rahul Dravid is playing in this match. Rahul Dravid, fresh from the just concluded World Cup in which hosts India lost to Australia in the finals and his wife Dr. Vijeta, were seen in a relaxed mood watching their son play in the          Under-19 Tournament in Mysuru.

Rahul Dravid refused to give interviews saying he was there like any other parent of a cricketer to watch their child play.

Samit Dravid is an all-rounder, who had figures of 11/0 in the 5 overs that he had bowled when we went to the press.

Karnataka will play Uttar Pradesh in their next match at the same venue (SDNR Wadiyar Stadium) to be held from Dec. 8 to Dec. 11, according to KSCA, Mysuru Zone Convenor R.K. Hari Krishna Kumar, who said that all preparations for the match were made much in advance.

With Rahul Dravid’s tenure as Team India’s Head Coach ending with the conclusion of the Cricket World Cup 2023, the senior national team was without a designated coach until today (Nov. 29).

While VVS Laxman is with India’s troops for the 5-match T20I series against Australia, work was ongoing in the background to find the ideal coaching solution. It is learnt that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) offered an extension to Rahul Dravid, after the role of the T20 coach was offered to AshishNehra.

According to sources, Nehra was offered the job to lead India’s T20 team but he rejected the proposal. The BCCI then went to Rahul Dravid, asking him to continue coaching the team in all three formats. The former India Captain decided to extend his stay, along with his entire coaching staff.

Mysore/Mysuru: Roger Binny, President of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has said: “Women’s Premier League (WPL) has set the wheel in motion for taking women’s cricket to a different level, with budding players sure to get their due.”

He was addressing the gathering during the formal inauguration of All India Inter-University Cricket Tournament for Women 2022-23 (that began on Apr. 5 and played till Apr. 11), organised by JSS Science and Technology University (JSS STU) in association with Association of Indian Universities (AIU), at JSS-KSCA Ground, SJCE campus in city, last evening.

Binny, as he is known among the cricketers, said: “After I took over as BCCI President, women’s cricket has been the focal point of discussion. WPL (the first season held in March 2023) has a great future. I was very surprised to see the women players showing their prowess in the game on the field, that naturally gives a feeling that the women’s cricket has taken off to a different level. The girls have a good opportunity to set the goal to hone their cricketing skills.”

S.P. Manjunath, Secretary-1 of JSS Mahavidyapeetha, presenting Binny with his (Binny’s) pencil sketch portrait done by Dr. C. Revanna (extreme left), Director of Department of Physical Education, Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering (SJCE). Also seen are Dr. A.N. Santosh Kumar, Vice-Chancellor of JSS STU and Dr. S.A. Dhanaraj, Registrar of JSS-STU.

“When men’s IPL started in the year 2008, it helped a lot of Indian players to study the style of game of foreign players, by mixing with them. The women players also have got a similar opportunity to study the work culture of foreign players and the way they play and think about the game,” added Binny.

Asserting that WPL will also be a great success like men’s IPL, Binny called on the budding cricketers taking part in the tournament to explore the good opportunities and play for the country to make their parents feel proud of them.

Binny, who announced that Mysuru city holds a special place in his heart and is also fond of the place, went down the memory lane to recall his younger days, when he was an athlete first, before becoming a cricketer.

“As an athlete I had taken part in javelin throw and shot-put during Dasara Sports in city. Besides watching Karnataka team play cricket on the other side,” said Binny to the applause of the gathering.

Binny also disclosed that he is going to be a Mysurean shortly as he has brought a property in the city.

‘Rajeshwari Gayakwad – an alumnus of JSS’

Dr. A.N. Santosh Kumar, Vice-Chancellor of JSS STU, recalled the achievements of Roger Binny as a squad member of Indian cricket team that lifted its maiden World Cup in 1983.

Dr. Santosh Kumar also made a mention of Rajeshwari S. Gayakwad, the Indian woman cricketer, who is an alumnus of JSS Free School, a residential facility run by JSS Mahavidyapeetha at Suttur Sri Kshetra in Nanjangud.

Pencil sketch

A pencil portrait sketch of Binny by Dr. C. Revanna, Director of Department of Physical Education, Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering (SJCE), was also gifted to Binny on  the occasion.

S.P. Manjunath, Secretary-1 of JSS Mahavidyapeetha and Dr. S.A. Dhanaraj, Registrar of JSS-STU, were also present.

Mention 1983 World Cup, avid cricket lovers will pat recall the names of the squad members at the drop of a hat. Roger Binny, the right-arm fast medium pace bowler who scalped the highest 18 wickets, is undeniably one among those names.

Now aged 67, Binny holds the reins of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as its 36th President. Before that, Binny had served as the President of Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) from 1999 to 2022.

It was during his tenure, KSCA’s long-pending plan to build a world-class international cricket stadium at Hanchya-Sathagalli in the outskirts of Mysuru, got a much-needed pace, with the State Government recently giving its consent directing Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) to allot the land. MUDA has also decided to allot 20 acres of land at Hanchya-Sathagalli ‘B’ Zone to build the stadium.

Binny still has the cricket left in him, as he hit a few balls in his usual all-rounder style, formally inaugurating All India Inter-University Cricket Tournament for Women 2022-23, at JSS-KSCA Grounds at Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering (SJCE) campus in the city last evening.

For the budding women cricketers especially, it was the moment to draw some inspiration from the ‘tall figure’ of Indian cricket, and flocked him with uber enthusiasm to get his (Binny) autograph, never mind, it was on the ‘blue cap’, to treasure the moment for years to come. Amid this fan frenzy, Binny spared a few minutes for a ‘short spell of interview’ with Star of Mysore. Excerpts:

Star of Mysore (SOM): 2023 marks the 50th year (Golden Jubilee) of Women’s Cricket in India (with the founding of Women’s Cricket Association of India in 1973). Has BCCI got any plans to commemorate the occasion?

Roger Binny: We at BCCI have been mulling over celebrating 50 years of women’s cricket in India. We also met some of those early women players in Mumbai, who were a part of the cricket then. Shubhangi Kulkarni, who currently represents the players side in BCCI, is also one among them. (Shubhangi made her international debut in India women’s cricket team’s first women’s cricket series against West Indies women’s cricket team in 1976).

Star of Mysore (SOM): But are there any specific plans to make the Golden Jubilee year of women’s cricket memorable?

Roger Binny: It is a milestone moment indeed and we are planning something. With the World Cup also scheduled from Oct. 5 to Nov. 19, 2023, we will plan the celebrations.

SOM: Soon after taking over as BCCI President in October 2022, you announced pay parity bringing the match fees for women cricketers on par with men. But women cricketers will be largely benefited only if they play more?

Roger Binny: That’s what we are also looking at and the recently hosted Women’s Premier League (WPL) is one such initiative. In the future, you will get to see more matches and tournaments exclusively for women cricketers.

SOM: Like foreign countries, has the BCCI got plans to set up an exclusive museum to trace the evolution of women’s cricket in India?

Roger Binny: Several State Cricket Associations already have museums, like Karnataka State Cricket Association, Gujarat Cricket Association (Narendra Modi Stadium at Motera, Ahmedabad in Gujarat) and Punjab Cricket Association. The women’s cricket is also a part of these museums.

In a landmark move, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) today announced that the match fee for both men and women cricketers (contracted) will be the same.

The decision to bring women cricketers on par with men, in terms of match fee, is in many ways a landmark decision.

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah confirmed that the contracted senior women’s cricketers will earn the same match fee as their male counterparts.

Jay Shah tweeted “I’m pleased to announce @BCCI’s first step towards tackling discrimination. We are implementing pay equity policy for our contracted @BCCIWomen cricketers. The match fee for both Men and Women Cricketers will be same as we move into a new era of gender equality in Cricket. The @BCCIWomen cricketers will be paid the same match fee as their male counterparts. Test (Rs. 15 lakhs), ODI (Rs. 6 lakhs), T20I (Rs. 3 lakhs). Pay equity was my commitment to our women cricketers and I thank the Apex Council for their support. Jai Hind.”

The decision comes just days after it was decided in the BCCI AGM that the first season of the women’s IPL will be played in 2023.

Mysore/Mysuru: Cricket stakeholders in Mysuru have welcomed the announcement of BCCI President Roger Binny that the IPL will spread to smaller cities like Mysuru, Hubballi-Dharwad and Belagavi.

“Franchise cricket is ready to make inroads into smaller cities. I am paying close attention to spectator facilities and comfort across stadiums in India. One of the reasons is the fact that franchise cricket, especially in the short format, is all set to spread its wings to smaller cities,” Binny stated at a press conference in Bengaluru recently.

“We have had a few matches being played at Rajkot and Ranchi for instance and this trend will definitely continue. Don’t be surprised if you see IPL matches being played in Mysuru, Dharwad or Hubballi soon,” he said.

Welcoming the statement, Arjun Ranga, Managing Director of N.R. Group and the sponsor of the Mysore Warriors Team told Star of Mysore this morning that it is a fantastic move to hold IPL in smaller cities like Mysuru.

“Mysuru at present has the Srikantadatta Narasimharaja (SDNR) Wadiyar Cricket Ground that has a good pitch. But it does not have much space to accommodate spectators for IPL matches that will be in the range of 20,000 to 25,000. I think once the new KSCA Stadium comes up in Mysuru, it will be a game-changer for this city,” he said.

“Cricket spirit-wise, Mysuru city is ideal to host IPL matches as we have seen a packed stadium during Mysore Warriors matches in the past and now there is good connectivity also through road, rail and air. A new stadium and IPL matches will give an international exposure for Mysuru and the region’s cricketing talent,” Arjun Ranga added.

KSCA Mysuru Zone Convenor S. Sudhakar Rai also hailed the BCCI move and said that people of Mysuru and the cricketing fraternity are eagerly looking forward to the conduct of IPL matches. “I think in two years from now, Mysuru will have an international-level stadium and Mysuru will be included in the international cricketing map,” he added.
